Graduation Reflections from scholarship recipient Rodné Trévol; with a Hands-On Commitment to Sustainable Agriculture in and for Haiti.
Hello to the entire team at Le Flambeau Foundation ,
I hope you are doing well. First of all, I would like to thank you for your ongoing interest in my journey and for this opportunity to share with you my vision for the next stage of my academic and professional life. As I approach the end of my studies in agronomy, I am taking the time to reflect on the knowledge acquired, the experiences lived, and especially how I wish to put them to use for my future and my country.
Editor’s Note: Rodné Trévol is a recipient of the Dr. Luc L. Colas Scholarship, dedicated to supporting leaders in Haiti, in sustainable development. He will be graduating in October 2026.
The knowledge gained at the university, as well as my various practical experiences, have allowed me to better understand the realities of the Haitian agricultural sector. Above all, they have reinforced my conviction that agriculture can be a source of income, a means of creating jobs, and an essential tool to contribute to the development of my country.
For my next step, my main goal is to progressively invest in agriculture and put into practice the knowledge I have acquired. I already have a sufficient amount of land to develop an agricultural project. Therefore, in the medium term, I wish to establish a modern, productive, and sustainable farm capable of generating income while creating opportunities for others. I also want to share my knowledge with producers and contribute to the improvement of agricultural practices in my community.
However, to bring this project to life, certain resources remain necessary. One of my main needs is the acquisition of a walk-behind tractor (tiller), which would allow me to facilitate soil preparation, reduce labor costs, and improve the efficiency of my agricultural activities. Regarding irrigation, there is also a possibility to secure about 60% funding if I submit an application for assistance. Such support would represent a real leverage point to start and develop my farm under better conditions.
At the same time, if I had the opportunity to receive a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree abroad, I would seize that opportunity with great gratitude. Such training would allow me to deepen my knowledge, acquire more technical skills, and discover modern agricultural methods and technologies. These two additional years of education would better prepare me before returning to put this knowledge to work for my project and my country.
In the longer term, I wish to develop a modern, well-equipped farm that can also serve as a model and a learning facility for other producers. I would also like to contribute to the creation of agronomists’ associations that could work together to offer concrete solutions to the challenges of the agricultural sector and participate in the fight against hunger in Haiti.
Therefore, I view my next step not only as building my professional career, but also as an opportunity to contribute to positive change in my country. My ambition is to transform my knowledge and experiences into concrete actions in order to participate in the development of a more productive, modern, and sustainable Haitian agriculture.
