Scholar Rodné Trevol – Year 1 Reflection

In the fall of 2024, the Le Flambeau Foundation awarded its inaugural Dr. Luc L. Colas scholarships to two students at Université Notre Dame d’Haïti in Cap-Haïtien. These scholarships cover their full tuition for their final two years of college as they pursue degrees in agronomy—a field vital for sustainable development and community empowerment in Haiti. Now, as they begin their final year, these students reflect on their journey  this past year, and share wisdom for the next generation, along with selecting a photo that captures their passion.

Below are remarks from Rodné Trevol, as he reflects on his past academic year, and prepares for his final year.

“Agriculture is my passion because it is a source of wealth for the future and for my community.”

Hello, members and supporters of the Le Flambeau Foundation !

I hope you are well. I would like to express my deep gratitude for the support you have provided me throughout this first year as a Dr. Luc L. Colas Scholar. This scholarship has been much more than just financial support: it has been a source of motivation, discipline, and perseverance in my career.

During my fourth year of agronomy studies at the University of Notre Dame of Haiti (Cap-Haïtien campus), I deepened my knowledge of natural resource management, agricultural production systems, and rural economics. I also had the opportunity to participate in enriching field activities, allowing me to better understand the agricultural realities of our country.

This year has strengthened my commitment to my vocation: to become an agricultural engineer serving the sustainable development of Haiti. My vision has become clearer: I want to specialize in agroecology and agricultural techniques adapted to small producers. In the face of food insecurity and climate challenges, it is imperative to offer sustainable, accessible, and innovative solutions.

On a personal level, I have also grown. I have learned to manage my time better, collaborate effectively with others, and demonstrate resilience in the face of unforeseen circumstances. These skills will serve me well beyond my academic life.

So I am now preparing to begin my fifth year with the same motivation, rigor, discipline, and determination.

To the young students who will follow this path after me, I wish to convey a message of encouragement: believe in yourself, even when resources are limited. Discipline, perseverance, and a love of a job well done are essential keys. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, seize learning opportunities, and above all, get involved in your community. What you accomplish today can change lives tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your trust and support.
