September 11th marks the birth anniversary of Ambassador Emile Saint-Lôt, the visionary spirit that was pivotal in founding the Le Flambeau Foundation . He is one of two founding fathers. Emile Saint-Lôt’s early years were deeply influenced by the U.S. military occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934. This experience ignited a fierce spirit of independence and a lifelong commitment to human rights and social justice. A distinguished lawyer, agronomist, and journalist, Saint-Lôt served in various leadership roles throughout his career. He was a senator, a university professor of law, and the chief justice of the civil court. His significant contributions to Haiti’s history and the global human rights movement are undeniable.
Saint-Lôt played a pivotal role in the founding of the United Nations
and served as Haiti’s first ambassador to the organization. He was also a signatory to the historic Universal Declaration of Human Rights, alongside First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and representatives from 46 other nations. As a member of the UN Security Council, Saint-Lôt was instrumental in securing the independence of numerous countries, including Libya and Somalia. His leadership and advocacy for self-determination significantly shaped the modern world order.
In 1957, at the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Emile Saint-Lôt delivered a powerful speech advocating for Libya’s independence.
