Haiti and the UDHR (December 10, 2023)

Le Flambeau Foundation , Inc., December 9, 2023.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on December 10, 1948, in Paris, during its 183rd plenary meeting. Haiti was one of the 48 countries that voted to pass the UDHR.  Haiti Ambassador Émile Saint-Lot, a founding father of the Le Flambeau Foundation , was elected by his peers to serve as rapporteur and also served as a signatory for the document on behalf of Haiti; joining U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and the remaining 46 countries in ratifying the document. As of today, 192 countries have signed the UDHR.  Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on  the 10th of December.  This year, December 10, 2023 is the 75th year anniversary.

EDUCATION is a human right.  “Education is not only a fundamental human right, but also a prerequisite for everyone to realize human rights for themselves, individually and personally, as well as in the community and society to which people belong.”  Article 26 of the UDHR states that “Everyone has the right to education.” The Le Flambeau Foundation recognizes the critical role that education plays in empowering individuals and fostering a thriving society. We provide scholarships and educational programming in Haiti, for youth in Haiti; believing that education is the key to unlocking their potential and building a brighter future for the country.  We avoid the historical brain drain and focus on stimulating brain circulation in Haiti.

We invite others to join us in supporting this important cause. By investing in education, we can all “Be the Solution” and help ensure that all individuals in Haiti have the opportunity to reach their full potential.    For young people in Haiti, we urge you to invest by helping others to educate and elevate.

We are a part of the movement started 75 years ago by one of our founding fathers, Ambassador Émile Saint-Lot and his peers.   The torch has been passed and picked up – by us and by many of all ages and nationalities. We invite you to join us in supporting this important cause. By investing in education in Haiti, we can “Be the Solution” and help ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
