Fall Semester 2010 THE SPARK of Le Flambeau Winners Announced!
Haiti is certainly top-of mind these days most recently with a focus on the elections…including surprise visits. Fresh articles on this topic are featured in the Haiti News section of our website. Today’s e-mail is about the outcome of a different vote, one that is equally important with an outcome that is clear. The unified voice of our youth speaks in no uncertain terms. Today we announce the winners!
This has been an exceptionally active semester for THE SPARK of Le Flambeau language exchange program. It is hard to believe that we are already preparing to enter the program’s seventh term. The students in Haiti overcame incredible obstacles as they succeeded in connecting on the internet weekly and in making substantive contributions to the class. The U.S. team grew as Miami welcomed even more members in Milwaukee and we had the largest class in the history of the program. Finally, we had one of our team members, Ruchama, who received the first Le Flambeau Foundation Earthquake Scholarship and she is now a college student in the U.S., preparing to lead rebuilding initiatives with youth in Haiti upon her return. Fantastic!
The Fall session launched in September and ran for ten weeks. The dialogue was stimulating, enlightening and exceptionally rewarding as classmates improved their English/French fluency and technology skills. Class members and Graders voted for peers they felt deserved the top spots. As the rules required, those in the U.S. voted for classmates in Haiti and those in Haiti voted for classmates in the U.S. Voting results were reviewed and approved by the high school teachers who volunteered their time serving as Graders throughout the semester. Class members also rated their spring semester experience with THE SPARK of Le Flambeau program and scored a 4.5 (out of 5) – nice! Great suggestions came in and are being incorporated into the coming Spring session.
An extra warm THANK YOU is extended to student leader and moderator Roxanne along with fellow student moderators Barbara and Isabel, Superviseur Mdme Lochet, English Grader Ms. Fallahay, Superviseurs Mdme Jacquart and Mdme Schmidt Dess, Haiti Team Captains Mr. Vital Ms. Constant, Ms. Ruchama and Mr. Marvens; and our IT support leader Ms. Tracy Doome. To our active class members of THE SPARK of Le Flambeau fall semester session – you were great! In the end we all win. The Torch is lit. Pass it on!
Warmest Regards,
Le Flambeau Foundation Inc.
