Dr. Luc L. Colas dedicated his life to leadership, education, and service. His enduring spirit continues to inspire and uplift countless individuals who benefited from his guidance and accomplishments. The legacy of Dr. Luc Colas is evident in the lives of doctors, lawyers, judges, mayors, diplomats, and other leaders shaping the present and future, particularly in Haiti. Education was a cornerstone of his life’s work. Renowned for his exceptional character, intellect, discipline, and visionary thinking, Dr. Luc Colas possessed a profound love for humanity and an unwavering belief in its potential.

Born in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti, in 1921, as one of eight children, young Luc Colas demonstrated exceptional academic promise. He went on to become a respected medical doctor, lawyer, judge, college president, dean, and professor. Dr. Colas was also a founding member of the Cap-Haïtien Rotary Club and represented Haiti on a medical mission to Hong Kong as a Rotarian.

With an impressive career as a medical doctor in various parts of the world and key positions held with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Haiti and Africa, Dr. Luc Colas embarked on a new chapter at the age of 64. He returned to school to study law, graduating at the top of his class. He subsequently practiced law then served as a Government Commissioner and then as Judge, in Haiti.

Throughout his life, Dr. Colas embraced every opportunity for learning. His insatiable curiosity and dedication to lifelong education were a hallmark of his character.  For Dr. Luc L. Colas life was a classroom and he soaked up volumes while he was there.

As Dr. Colas pursued his own education, he simultaneously inspired and mentored countless young minds. His integrity and discipline served as a model for those around him, many of whom followed in his footsteps. A renowned thought leader and educator, Dr. Colas was known for his ability to bring people together and foster intellectual discourse on a wide range of topics. Whether in the classroom, at informal gatherings, or in his own home, he created spaces for stimulating conversations.  One of Dr. Colas’ favorite subjects of discussion was the life of Sénateur Emile Saint-Lot, a brilliant figure in Haitian history. These legendary dialogue sessions have become an integral part of the Le Flambeau Foundation ’s programming.

Dr. Luc Colas was a trailblazing figure who dedicated his life to education and service. His passion for uplifting others led him to help found the Le Flambeau Foundation , providing educational opportunities for youth in Haiti.  Dr. Colas’ unwavering commitment to education and his belief in the power of knowledge to transform lives, continue to inspire and guide the Le Flambeau Foundation ’s mission to empower youth in Haiti, stimulating brain circulation for building a brighter future in and for Haiti.

The spirits of Dr. Luc L. Colas, along with that of our other founding father Ambassador Emile Saint-Lot, continue to drive the Foundation’s mission. Their shared vision of a prosperous and equitable Haiti endures, inspiring us to empower young Haitians to reach their full potential and contribute to the development of Haiti. Their legacy will continue to guide the Foundation’s work for generations to come.
